Alumna Hannah Rens Reaches for the Stars

Lots of kids aspire to become astronauts but few go on to build careers in space exploration. That hasn’t stopped Hannah Rens from chasing her dreams into orbit.

The 24-year-old is a systems engineer for Boeing Space and Launch, working on Boeing’s Starliner, a commercial crew and cargo vehicle that will be transporting NASA astronauts to the international space station.

“My ultimate career goal is to be chief engineer of a permanent human habitat on the moon,” says Rens, a former participant at First Tee – Siouxland and First Tee volunteer. “To achieve that goal, I need to develop advanced business skills, gain industry experience and further my engineering technical education.”

That’s why she’s attending the First Tee Alumni Summit presented by Gallagher this November in Dallas. The event provides an opportunity for selected alumni to advance their career by building new skills while reconnecting with fellow alumni and chapter leaders.

“I’m looking to learn more about working in a rapidly evolving industry, startups and founding your own business, and how to develop an effective personal brand,” she says.

Rens says her nine years in First Tee helped shape her future. “It provided me with a structured path to improving my golf game, peer and trusted mentors, and interpersonal and professional skills that have been essential in achieving my goals,” she says.

While in First Tee, she was selected to attend the Leaders and Entrepreneurs Forum at Disney World. “Getting to meet other students from across the U.S. while listening and working with successful business owners and entrepreneurs was unlike any other experience I had in high school,” she says. “The business principles and goals I learned have stayed with me.”

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Rens began her career with internships focused on aircraft maintenance and repair. As Starliner prepares to expand its service to additional sites in Earth’s orbit, Rens works on vehicle life span and sustainment. Ultimately, Starliner will become one of the first spacecraft with turnaround times closer to traditional air traffic. Talk about a Game Changer.

Rens now serves as a mentor for high school and college students who want careers in the space industry, and she’s enrolled in an astronautical engineering master’s program at the University of Southern California focusing on human spaceflight.

Rens still golfs, and she’s a certified open water and dry suit SCUBA diver. Learn more about the accomplishments of First Tee alumni

First Tee – Massachusetts Attends Top Golf Live Stadium Tour at Fenway Park for the Second Year

NORTON, MASSACHUSETTS – On Friday, November 4th, twenty First Tee – Massachusetts participants from our Franklin Park location, gathered for an unforgettable night at the Top Golf Live Stadium Tour at Fenway Park. The evening was made possible by Fenway Sports Group, who donated the tee time.

Participants of all skill levels from ages 7 to 14 were able to enjoy this experience, including some of our coaches and volunteers.

Boston’s Franklin Park participant, Dante Gonzales was interviewed by channel 4 news and described hitting balls at Fenway Park an “extraordinary experience, plus its super warm out and whats better than that”.

First Tee of Massachusetts continues to grow and teach children across the state with plans to open two to three more locations in 2023. The work done by First Tee would not be made possible without experiences like this one, our coaches and volunteers.

2022 Teen Game Changers Conference

Twenty teenagers from around the state joined together on Saturday, October 15th to attend the inaugural First Tee – Massachusetts Teen Game Changers Conference at The Links at Mass Golf. This event was created to offer teen-aged participants an educational and social opportunity, along with a chance to get out on the golf course together. This opportunity was provided free of charge with the support of the First Tee Teen Retention and Recruitment Grant, provided by PGA TOUR Superstores.

“This was an incredible day and exceeded all of our expectations,” said Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee – Massachusetts. “The level of engagement and collaboration we saw from our participants was tremendous. They really demonstrated a desire to invest in themselves, their peers, and our chapter, and showed genuine appreciation for the opportunity that was created for them. It was a fun and impactful day, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcomes.”

After kicking off with an icebreaker to set the tone for the event, the participants heard from three speakers on a variety of topics. Leading off was Iain Highfield, Academy Director & Mental Performance Coach at KOHR Golf Center in Natick, MA. A three-time published author and multiple Golf Digest award-winner, Iain used his extensive knowledge base and dynamic personality to teach our teens strategies for mental high performance in golf and in everyday life.

Next, we welcomed Scott Haskell, Senior Sports Marketing Director for Golf at WHOOP, the wearable fitness technology company based in Boston. Scott spoke to the group about the measurables of athletic performance, the effect of stress, and the importance of sleep to our rest and recovery. WHOOP is a proud corporate partner of First Tee on the national level and has provided extremely generous financial support to First Tee – Massachusetts as well.

The education sessions were capped off by a presentation from Luis Acevedo, the Finance Director at Entegris and a volunteer with Junior Achievement. He was supported by Radhames Nova, the president and CEO of JA of Greater Boston as well. They spoke about career opportunities, financial goals, and developing a plan to pursue and fund the goals you have for your life.

After each presentation, participants gathered in small groups to debrief and discuss what they learned, then shared with the group at large.

Following these education sessions, the participants, presenters, and volunteers enjoyed lunch and then headed out for 18 holes of golf. Nine participants opted to play in a stroke play competition, won by Kyzar Joshi, with an outstanding round of 3-over par. The remaining participants played a Social Scramble, enjoying a low-stress round in great weather while forming new relationships and deepening existing ones.

On the back of this extremely successful day, it is our intention to make it an annual event as we seek to engage our existing teenagers on an even deeper level outside of class, while recruiting even more to take advantage of everything First Tee has to offer.

16th Annual First Tee – Massachusetts Fundraiser Tournament

NORTON, Massachusetts — Another strong showing of 128 golfers took part in the shotgun start event at TPC Boston, with the proceeds supporting programs and organizational activities for First Tee — Massachusetts. According to Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee — Massachusetts, the tournament has continued to grow each year with the net revenue from this year’s tournament increasing by 35% over 2021’s outing.

“We’re extremely grateful to have vast support from our golf community in sustaining our annual operations as well as efforts to expand our programming in physical locations and the depth of our overall offerings,” said Harris, who has led the First Tee program since 2018. “We had a lot of first-time participants this year based on an increase in sponsors, and some new player groups joining us. We have now tripled the net revenue coming in from this fundraiser since 2018, and I’m extremely proud of the hard work our staff and our Committee has put into growing the impact of this annual event.”

This year’s increase in sponsors was highlighted by a new Presenting Sponsor in Lighthouse Electrical Contracting, Inc., a full-service, union electrical contractor based in Rockland. Herbie Aikens, president of Lighthouse Electrical and a decorated amateur golfer, serves on the First Tee Committee and has been a steadfast supporter of the organization.

“Golf is the game I love, and it’s bringing the game to people who would otherwise struggle to get access,” Aikens said. “We contribute to a lot of charities, but this one creates great humans, and the everlasting effects are unquantifiable. This is something near and dear to my heart, and hopefully we want to support this cause forever.”

“We are so thankful for Lighthouse’s commitment to this event and to the First Tee – Massachusetts chapter overall,” said Harris. “When the presenting sponsor opportunity opened, Herbie immediately stepped in to sponsor this year and also expressed his desire for a long-term partnership. That kind of support and commitment is what every non-profit organization dreams about and we can’t express our gratitude strongly enough.”

Aikens played in a four-some with J.P. Norden, who lost a leg in the Boston Marathon bombing and since then his family has launched its own charity to help other amputees in need through fundraising efforts.

Other notable participants in the field included 2022 Special Olympics gold medalist Tyler Lagassewhose story was profiled in the Fall 2022 edition of MassGolfer Magazine. Lagasse works part-time at PGA Tour Superstore, and he played with Tim CarlsonKevin Cullivan, and Greg Cosgrove, the general managers of the three PGA Tour Superstore locations in Massachusetts (Braintree, Natick, Peabody).

Sarah Forbes, chair of the First Tee Committee also participated, as did Kyzar Joshi, a high school senior who completed the First Tee Ace Level this year. First Tee lead coach Joe Eadie (Springfield) and Kevin Frawley, the head golf professional at William J. Devine Golf Course, the Boston site for First Tee, were also playing.

As for results, Andrew GodekMichael RolleriRoy Dellinger, and John Rolleri took home the low gross team score of 8-under-par 65. Godek shot 3-under 68 on his own ball that included an eagle on the par-5 14th. The team of Phil CollettiAlex ColettiRyan Bjorn, and John Driscoll won the net division, winning a three-way tiebreaker with a score of 14-under 59.

In addition to this year’s tournament, there are many ways you can support the mission of First Tee and help us introduce the game of golf and its inherent values like honesty, respect, and confidence, to kids and teens. Options include: equipment donationsvolunteerism, and monetary contributions.

First Tee Massachusetts, Kyzar Joshi, Selected to First Tee College Scholarship Program

Tim Carlson, Kyzar Joshi, Kyle Harris

First Tee participants from Minnesota, Massachusetts, San Francisco and Orange County, Calif. have each been awarded scholarships and selection in to the First Tee College Scholarship Program. The teens were selected following their participation in the First Tee Leadership Series and Summit in partnership with PGA TOUR Superstore based on their intentional and innovative commitment to personal growth and development as leaders throughout the course of the program.

Kyzar is 17-year-old high school senior at Ashland High School in Ashland, Mass. He has been involved with First Tee for more than 10 years. He holds a 4.12 GPA and his career aspirations include playing college golf and majoring in finance or economics in college.  Kyzar serves as his class treasurer, and helped lead the Ashland High School golf team to the state section tournament. Kyzar is in the process of completing the ACE level of the First Tee Curriculum.

“We are extremely proud of Kyzar and this honor is well deserved,” said Director of Operations Kyle Harris. “Kyzar has been a dedicated First Tee participant for many years and is committed to living out the values of our program. He put in the work and got a lot out of our local leadership series, and then was clearly a standout at the Leadership Summit in Montana. On the golf course, in the classroom, and in his community, Kyzar continues to be an outstanding representative of First Tee Massachusetts and we’re thrilled that he will have this level of support through his college experience.”

As First Tee Scholars, the teens will receive support throughout their post-graduate careers. The need and merit-based program provides scholarships up to $5,000 per year, renewable for up to four years of college admission. In addition, each scholar is paired with a dedicated, trained adult mentor who will help encourage and guide them throughout the college experience, including virtual and in person meetups. The program also provides professional development workshops held in person throughout the year.

“We are very proud of these four deserving teens from across the country,” said Greg McLaughlin, First Tee CEO. “They each showed dedication and impressive character traits throughout the Leadership Series and Summit.  They are leaders in their schools, at home and at their First Tee chapters. Through the First Tee College Scholarship Program, we will continue to support them in their personal and professional development and empower them to hone their leadership skills as they pursue their careers. We’re thankful for partners like PGA TOUR Superstore who support these game changing initiatives.”

The four teens were selected from the more than 250 participants who attended the Leadership Series and Summit.  Boasting an average GPA of 3.9 the teens meet the College Scholarship Program eligibility requirements which are based on academic performance, length and involvement in First Tee programs, financial need and commitment to volunteerism.

First Tee College Scholarship Program is made possible by donors and corporate partners who stand behind the program and First Tee’s mission. For more than a decade, PGA TOUR Superstore and PGA TOUR Superstore Chairman Arthur M. Blank have championed First Tee’s mission through charitable and in-kind donations across the country. In September 2020, PGA TOUR Superstore announced a new grant that will help First Tee reach more youth across the U.S. and strengthen its curriculum for teenage participants, including the development of the Leadership Series and Summit.

“We are committed to being a positive influence in our communities and truly believe in the positive impact sports has in developing and supporting youth,” said Dick Sullivan, President & CEO, PGA TOUR Superstore. “We are proud to partner with the First Tee to empower young people with values-based leadership skills that will help them succeed throughout the course of their life. Congratulations Gabriella, Jaylyn, Kyzar and Saloni.”

The Key to Setting Reachable Goals

Have you ever thought about your achievements in life? What were the dreams and ambitions that you wanted to work towards? How did you get there? At First Tee, these are the type of questions we propose to kids and teens to help them understand the process of attaining goals; but to reach their goal, they must first understand how goals are formulated.

A goal is something that you want to do, be or have, but it’s not something that you can do, be or have right at this moment. It’s something you must work to get in the future, and you can apply that to any challenge in life. For example, if your child wants to achieve Honor Roll and receive all As and Bs in school this year, what would that require them to do? They would need to do well on tests and assignments. How would they accomplish that? Encourage them to take good notes, turn in their work on time, and study for their tests.

For kids, having guidelines or tools can effectively help them identify their goals and make them feel comfortable about reaching them. At First Tee, we utilize four guidelines to do this. Talk to your child about the dreams they currently have and try these out for yourself.

Four Guidelines for Setting a Reachable Goal:

  • The goal is Positive:
    • I want to achieve a passing score of 80% or higher vs. I don’t want to fail this test
  • The goal is Important to You:
    • The goal needs to be important to you, not to someone else. You should be able to explain why you want to achieve it and why it will make a difference for you.
  • The goal is Specific:
    • You want to know exactly what you’re working toward.
  • The goal is Under your Control:
    • Your efforts will allow you to achieve this goal vs. Something that is out of your control like becoming famous or winning the lottery.

Goal setting is a strategy kids and teens will apply for the rest of their life. When we set our goals, we want to be very clear about them so that we have the best chance to achieve them. The key to remember is that goals come in all shapes and sizes. Just because it doesn’t work for someone else doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve it. Your kids will learn from both their achievements and setbacks, but as they begin to set personal goals, they will learn and grow in ways that you did not think possible.

They’re Headed to Montana – Two First Tee Massachusetts Participants Selected to Attend First Tee Leadership Summit

NORTON, Massachusetts – First Tee of Massachusetts participants Saidah DaSilva and Kyzar Joshi have been selected to attend the 2022 First Tee Leadership Summit in Montana in August. First Tee, a youth development organization that helps kids and teens build their strength of character through golf, is partnering with PGA TOUR Superstore to hold their second-annual Leadership Summit at PGA TOUR Superstore Chairman and First Tee Board Member Arthur M. Blank’s West Creek Ranch.

DaSilva (Dorchester, MA) and Joshi (Ashland, MA) are among 40 teens from PGA TOUR Superstore markets across the country who were selected out of more than 70 applicants for this experience. After completing a 5-week Leadership Series locally at the PGA TOUR Superstore in Natick, DaSilva and Joshi were nominated by the chapter and then selected by a national judging panel. First Tee – Massachusetts has now had at least one participant selected in each of the first two years of this leadership summit, as Boston’s Christopher Towle was chosen to attend in 2021.

“We are thrilled that both Saidah and Kyzar were selected for this amazing opportunity,” said First Tee – Massachusetts Director of Operations Kyle Harris. “They have both worked very hard and been outstanding representatives of our chapter for many years. We are very proud of what they have accomplished and can’t wait to see how this experience will continue to develop their leadership skills and their growth as people.”

DaSilva, 18, has been a part of First Tee Massachusetts at the Franklin Park location for five years, working her way to the Birdie level. A 2022 high school graduate, she will attend Providence College in the Fall and hopes to study Marketing. In addition to attending First Tee classes, DaSilva has represented the chapter in several other capacities, including giving a speech to the John D. Mineck Foundation at Boston Golf Club about the impact First Tee has had on her life.

Joshi, 17 has been involved in First Tee for more than 10 years. Currently working toward completing his ACE level certification, he will be entering his senior year of high school this Fall and has his eye on playing golf at the collegiate level. An accomplished junior player, Joshi recently qualified for this year’s Mass Golf Junior Amateur Powered by KOHR Golf.

“I am honored and excited to be selected for the leadership summit” said Joshi “It is an experience that I think I will greatly enjoy, and I look forward to learning all that I can throughout the week.”

The First Tee Leadership Summit is designed to strengthen leadership skills through dynamic outdoor and team-building activities with the intended purpose of personal growth, education and coming together to make a difference. The curriculum explores concepts such as positive risk-taking, relationship building and identifying character strengths.

“I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know both Kyzar and Saidah over the last year and I cannot think of a more deserving pair to earn this opportunity,” said Allyson Mollung, Program Manager for First Tee Massachusetts. “The connections they make, the things they learn and the overall experience they get is something they will take with them everywhere they go.”

Between participating in many tournaments of their own and volunteering at the 122nd U.S Open earlier in June, the two have had quite the summer. During the U.S. Open DaSilva walked as a standard bearer for not one, not two, but three previous U.S. Open winners (Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Rose and Gary Woodland), while Joshi found himself walking with the final group (Will Zalatoris and eventual winner Matt Fitzpatrick) during Sunday’s Championship round.

“I am extremely grateful to be able to attend the Summit and excited to travel to a new state. I am looking forward to meeting new people and gaining a better understanding on the game of golf” said DaSilva “I hope to gain a lot of experience and try new things.”

At the conclusion of the Summit, four students will be selected for the First Tee College Scholarship Program and will receive financial support as well as access to mentorship and professional development opportunities throughout their four-year collegiate experience.

First Tee Massachusetts Shines at The 122nd U.S. Open

PHOTOS | SOCIAL MEDIA | WEBSITE

BROOKLINE, Massachusetts – First Tee Massachusetts shines at the 122nd U.S. Open as close to 40 participants from all over the Bay State had the opportunity to walk as standard bearers throughout the week. The legendary week started out with practice round runs for each participant helping them get a feel for what the remainder of the week would look like, but the fun didn’t stop there.

Kira Dixon and Kensie Carrol

To start the week, 10-year-old Kensie Carrol had the chance to work alongside golf channel’s Kira Dixon, as an on-course reporter. Kensie got to experience what work is like for Dixon by interviewing Jon Rahm and Beau Hossler. Turns out, Kensie is a natural!

The remainder of the week was filled with nothing but smiles for First Tee participants especially for Conor Olsen. Conor, who just finished up chemo treatments two weeks prior to the tournament, walked with Sam Burns, Andrew Novak, Andrew Beckler and Scottie Scheffler during Monday’s steamy practice round. The four got to know Conor throughout the nine-hole round and were amazed by his resilience. Scheffler took the time to give Conor a signed ball and glove, thanking him for being out there in the heat. The week got even better for Conor as he found out the follow evening that he was cancer free before he returned to The Country Club to suit up again and walk another 18 holes.

Being able to provide so many of our participants with a once in a lifetime experience like this was incredible” said Allyson Mollung, Program Manager for First Tee – Massachusetts. “These kids work hard in school, and they work hard in our classes, so to be able to celebrate the start of summer with them at the U.S. Open was a lot of fun. I don’t know a lot of our older participants quite yet, so this gave me a chance to walk with them during the week and get to know them. The best part of the week was seeing the pros interact with our participants. They showed the kids kindness and just how grateful they were to have them out there throughout the week.”

Many of the participants were paired with some exciting groups throughout the week. Ace level Participant Kyzar Joshi, had the honor of being standard bearer for the leading group, Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick, during Sunday’s Championship round. “It was an experience of a lifetime!” said Kyzar “Watching the pros up close was an excellent learning opportunity. Especially Sunday, where I watched first-hand how the leaders maintained their composure despite the high stakes.”

Kyzar Joshi during Sunday’s Championship round

Not only were participants able to volunteer as standard bearers but thanks to Sentry Insurance’s generous donation, more than 100 First Tee – Massachusetts families were able to attend Monday and Tuesday’s practice rounds. “We are so grateful to Sentry Insurance for their incredibly generous donation of Practice Round tickets for the 2022 U.S. Open!” said Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee Massachusetts “Special thanks to Stephanie Smith, Chief Brand & Marketing Officer for Sentry for going above and beyond to spend time with us!”

For those who were not able to attend the U.S. Open, they did get to enjoy some fun activities over at Fisher Hill Reservoir. The Junior Activation site was sponsored by the USGA and First Tee National that included a Game Changers Pavilion, shaved ice by locals at Hawaiian Jims, a Cicso closest to the pin contest, a Cisco 4D Fan Experience, Trophy and photo opportunities, a seating area to relax and watch the championship broadcast, and oversized outdoor games.

This was an experience that these young people will remember for the rest of their lives and they are already asking when the U.S. Open will return to Massachusetts. First Tee Massachusetts could not be prouder of the way everyone represented the chapter both on an off site throughout the week. Franklin Park comes to The Links at Mass Golf

PHOTOS | SOCIAL MEDIA | WEBSITE

NORTON, Massachusetts – On Sunday, June 5th, a total of 50 First Tee Massachusetts Participants from the Boston – Franklin Park location had the opportunity to travel down to The Links at Mass Golf and play nine holes. “This was a great opportunity for some of our participants who don’t always get on course access in the city” said Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee Massachusetts.

The day was made possible by WHOOP, a wearable technology company based in Boston. Their support of First Tee both at the local and national level is tremendous. With their support, we were able to provide transportation to The Links to over 25 kids.

The Franklin Park Playstead First Tee – Massachusetts location is a unique location as classes are not always run on a golf course. Co-Lead Coaches Jim Tobin and Marcia Stevens, both certified PGA professionals, utilize an open field where they create a golf course feel complete with nine par three holes during the summer.

“a lot of kids don’t get on the golf course, so for them to be able to see what it takes to play from tee to green is huge” said Coach Stevens “watching them see what it’s like to hit from one shot to the next and into the hole, was awesome.”

The June play day wrapped up spring programming. Summer classes are in full swing and run Monday through Thursday until the end of August when they will travel down to The Links at Mass Golf again for another play day to close out the summer season.

First Tee Massachusetts joins Mass Golf’s Mother Daughter / Member Junior

Left to right: Joanne Gagnon, Saidah DaSilva, Kate Markowski, Cheryl Krueger, Allyson Mollung, Olivia Jatczak, Sarah Forbes, Nora Patton

WHITINSVILLE, Massachusetts – On Monday, July 11th, three female First Tee Massachusetts participants got the opportunity to play in the annual Mother Daughter / Member Junior Tournament at Whitinsville Golf Course. For the second year, First Tee teamed up to deliver a unique experience for some of the program participants, a chance to play in a competitive event with women who have experience playing tournament golf. The opportunity to mentor these young women came from the female members of Mass Golf’s Board of Directors as an opportunity to create stronger connections with the youth development program that the organization supports, not to mention, to grow the game with younger generations. Sarah Forbes, member of the Board of Directors and chair of the First Tee Committee was joined by fellow Board member Joanne Gagnon as well as Nora Patton and Cheryl Kruger from Orchards Golf Club.

“What an amazing experience. I loved having the opportunity for a second year to spend time on the course getting to know one of our First Tee girls.  Our goal was to have fun and we succeeded! We also got to enjoy playing golf together in a relaxed environment on a great course. I was so impressed with all of the First Tee girls who joined us.” said committee member Sarah Forbes. “It can be intimidating to play with someone you don’t know. But once you take that leap, you realize that it isn’t as scary as you think and you open the door to so many wonderful opportunities. They were amazing – lots of smiles, great conversations as well as some excellent golf swings and putts.”

First Tee Massachusetts started as a way to bring an affordable junior golf program to youth and communities that did not have them. What First Tee soon discovered was that by blending the rules of the game with life and leadership skills, kids and teens didn’t just learn how to putt – they were learning important values. Mass Golf currently offers programming at seven program locations across the Bay State.

“It was great to have three of our female participants out here with a few dedicated female volunteer leaders today,” said Allyson Mollung, Program Manager for First Tee Massachusetts. “They’re playing some awesome golf, making some great connections and just having fun. Having the girls out here helps them get more comfortable with the game and allows them to really build their confidence as female golfers.”

The three young women from First Tee Massachusetts came from different program locations around the state and have not had the opportunity to meet one another until today. Representing their respective parts of the state, it became very evident that the skills and core values from First Tee were utilized out on the course to make for a fun and competitive day of golf.

First Tee Massachusetts Daniel Sears Selected into First Tee College Scholarship Program

NORTON, Massachusetts (June 8, 2022) – Daniel Sears from First Tee – Massachusetts has been selected as one of 25 Scholars to join the First Tee College Scholarship Program’s Class of 2022. This is the largest class to date and a significant milestone as the youth development organization celebrates 25 years of helping young people build their strength of character through golf.

Sears will be attending Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he plans to major in philosophy and finance. Active in First Tee – Massachusetts for 11 years, he participates in volunteering and coaching at the Springfield location. He also volunteers in his community, plays soccer, baseball and runs track at his high school. Sears is the founder of Respect for Life Club at his high school, a club that helps spread awareness of injustices that takes away from anyone’s human dignity.

“First Tee has taught me how to most effectively work with others, as well as the importance of swallowing my pride and admitting when I need help or when I do not understand something,” said Sears. “This lesson is very important for me in particular because one of my largest issues for many years had been a struggle with pridefullness. For the longest time, I thought that it was a sign of weakness to ask others for help or that it made me look dumb or not ready to take on the responsibility I had at hand. In my time with First Tee, I have learned that to be the exact opposite of the truth.”

First Tee College Scholarship Program extends its impact to First Tee alumni across the U.S. by providing support throughout their post-graduate careers. Sears will be paired with a dedicated, trained adult mentor who will help encourage and guide him throughout the college experience, including virtual and in-person meetups. The program also provides professional development workshops held in person throughout the year, and up to $5,000 per year toward tuition.

“I offer congratulations and a warm welcome to our Class of 2022 First Tee Scholars,” said Greg McLaughlin, CEO of First Tee. “With the support of our donors, we’re able to provide this ongoing support as they matriculate through college and prepare for future careers. These outstanding young leaders have bright futures ahead, and we believe the skills and values developed through First Tee will empower them throughout their collegiate journey and beyond.”

“Danny has been a wonderful asset to First Tee – Massachusetts for many years,” said Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee – Massachusetts. “Danny was a long-time participant at our Fenway Golf location in East Longmeadow, and is now translating that experience over to becoming a terrific coach and mentor for the next generation of Game Changers. We are so proud to have Danny as a representative of our chapter and we know he will do great things as he takes the next steps in his education and his life.”

Applications for the Class of 2022 were received from participants across the First Tee network. Following an online application process, Sears participated in one-on-one interviews and was selected by a national committee. In addition to academic performance, applicants were considered based on financial need, chapter involvement, volunteerism, and other criteria.

First Tee College Scholarship Program is made possible by donors and corporate partners who stand behind the program and First Tee’s mission, including 3M, A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, Astros Golf Foundation, Brendan and Shay Cavanagh, Charles Schwab, Chevron Corporation, David and Geri Epstein Private Foundation, Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Fund, Edward and Lisa Vaughan, Jon Clay, Nelson and Michele Carbonell Family Foundation, Paul and Ruth Flowers, Peter A. Bonanni Scholarship Fund, PURE Insurance, Timothy W. Finchem Scholarship Fund, TruGreen, USSGA Memorial Fund, and Zotec Foundation.

Why Girls + Growing through Golf = Empowerment

Did you know more than 80 percent of First Tee chapters offer programming specifically for girls?

“Growing up playing golf, I never imagined being in the golf industry,” said Rebecca Caimano, assistant executive director at First Tee — Greater Philadelphia, who joined the chapter in 2011 to help grow its girls programming. “It was tough being the only female who played golf.”

Now, Rebecca is among thousands of leaders/coaches who are involved in First Tee.

First Tee views golf as a metaphor for life. It’s not the score that counts, but what you learn along the way. The game is a perfect practice ground for learning skills that extend far beyond the course. Let’s face it, digging deep when things get tough is a natural part of our sport – and life – experiences.

As we celebrate our 25th anniversary (& Women’s Golf Day), First Tee is proud of the role we’re playing in helping more young girls embrace the sport and what they can learn through it. Thanks to many female coaches and leaders throughout our network – like Rebecca – we are a safe place where girls can come, be themselves and learn from coaches and role models on the course and in the business world.

Also, thanks to organizations like USGA (a Founding Partner), LPGA-USGA Girls Golf and John Deere, sponsor of the Drive Your Future Academy, a national leadership development opportunity for female First Tee teens, we continue to intentionally offer opportunities for girls’ personal growth and development in many ways.

Empowering girls for a brighter future

While many First Tee alumnae have gone on to work in golf, others have excelled in different areas, including medicine, journalism and public affairs. And we think that’s great for them, and for the world around us.

Studies have shown that women leaders are engaging and collaborative, yet it hasn’t always been easy for women to break into many top leadership roles. Golf can help.

Ninety percent of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf, according to the PGA of America, and more than half of all businesspeople believe golf is a valuable networking tool. Women executives believe that a background in sport was helpful to career advancement because it prepared them to work better in teams, and behaviors and techniques can be applied to the corporate setting (Women’s Sports Foundation).

First Tee teaches valuable life skills that can help girls as they become leaders. Through our personal growth and junior golf programs, we encourage girls to build self-confidence that they’ll carry with them into their future.

“I originally stuck with it [golf] because I wanted to beat my brother,” Rebecca continued. “And now, here I am, using a sport that changed my life to change others.”

Now, that’s girl power.

Approximately 25% of First Tee’s coaches are women, and we’d love to increase that number! If you are interested or know of a passionate female leader in your life, please point her here to get involved: https://firsttee.org/get-involved/coach-volunteer/
