Alex Dias and Briana Rodriguez Win Inaugural First Tee – Massachusetts Chapter Championship

NORTON, Mass – First Tee of Massachusetts held its inaugural Chapter Championship tournament on Saturday, Aug. 3, as 54 junior golfers from program locations around the state gathered to compete at The Links at Mass Golf. Taunton’s Alex Dias captured the Boys Championship title, defeating Foxboro’s Jack Yucatonis in a playoff, while Springfield’s Briana Rodriguez won the Girls Championship. The team title was won by the squad from The Links.

With more than 100 players, parents, staff and volunteers gathered around the No. 1 tee box, Dias and Yucatonis went to a sudden-death playoff after each shooting a 4-over 58 in the Boys division on the 18-hole par-3 golf course. Trailing by one shot going into his 18th hole, Dias knocked in a 15-foot putt to record his first birdie of the day, ultimately forcing the playoff. Yucatonis had recorded three birdies on the day but a bogey on his final hole dropped him back into a tie. After winning the coin toss, Dias knocked his tee shot on the first playoff hole to about 20 feet, leaving himself an uphill putt. Yucatonis missed the green long and despite a well-played recovery shot, was not able to get up-and-down to save his par. Dias calmly lagged his first putt to inside of two feet, then tapped in to claim the victory.

In the Girls division, Rodriguez bested a field of 17 girls as she made a pair of birdies and didn’t card anything worse than a bogey on her way to a 4-over 58, posting a four-shot victory over runner-up Jenna Saini of Wayland.

In the team competition, nine of First Tee – Massachusetts’ 11 program locations were represented. Each team was made of six individuals who attend First Tee classes at that location, including at least two boys and two girls. The teams were selected by the Lead Coach of each respective location. The top five out of six scores on each hole were counted toward the team score. The Links at Mass Golf posted an overall team score of +61 for the team victory. The winning squad featured Dias, Yucatonis, Sam Goodman (Boston), David Jope (Freetown), Caroline Ullucci (Norfolk) and Emiliana Zamora (Boston). They were coached by Drew Chapman, the head PGA golf professional at The Links.

“This was an incredible inaugural event,” said Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee – Massachusetts. “Not only did we see some great golf, but the kids got to meet and engage with other participants from all over the state. I am so proud of all of our kids who came out to compete, and so thankful to all of the coaches, volunteers, staff, and parents who helped make it happen. This will definitely be an annual event moving forward.”

The tournament marked the first of its kind for the chapter, as it brought First Tee participants from around the state together. For some, it was a chance to prove their mettle on the course, while for others it was a light introduction to competitive golf but still within a learning environment.

FIRST TEE Massachusetts: building foundations and building a shed

HYANNIS, Massachusetts – Long-time First Tee – Massachusetts participant David Jope beamed with pride as he watched a group of younger kids hitting golf shots in front of a newly constructed storage shed at Hyannis Golf Course. David had recently built the shed as his Eagle Scout project, bringing his passions for Scouting and First Tee together to serve the next generation of golfers following behind him.

Online: Register For First Tee Class | Program Locations | First Tee Massachusetts Home

David began his own First Tee journey in that same spot at Hyannis Golf Course more than seven years earlier. Coming to the program with no golf experience, he developed into a strong high school golfer and was twice invited to represent First Tee – Massachusetts at the Chubb Classic Champions Challenge in Naples, Florida. David was also a key contributor to the winning team at the inaugural First Tee – Massachusetts Chapter Championship earlier this year.

More important than his on-course success, David fully embraces and lives out all of the life skills and character values that First Tee instills in its participants. He is extremely respectful, responsible, and a caring member of his community. He has grown from a shy and reserved participant to a peer leader. David has also developed relationships with mentors and other participants that will benefit him throughout his life. In fact, he credits First Tee alumni Keira Joshi with helping him uncover self-confidence and helping him come further out of his shell as they participated in the Naples event together.

When it came time for David to select a project as he tried to earn his Eagle Scout designation, he knew he wanted to connect it to First Tee – Massachusetts and give back to another organization he cared so much about. Realizing that the existing storage shed at Hyannis Golf Course had fallen into disrepair, he knew that was how he could make an impact. David completed the project with the help of other scouts from his troop and his four brothers, including three older brothers who are Eagle Scouts and a younger brother who is on that same path.

The shed will be an invaluable resource for the First Tee coaches and participants at Hyannis Golf Course, housing equipment, training aids, and other materials will be used to deliver programs on a daily basis.

About First Tee Massachusetts

In 2003, Mass Golf joined the First Tee national network with the goal of bringing an affordable junior golf program to youth and communities that did not have them.

Since that time, Mass Golf has introduced eight new program locations, bringing the total to ten: Cyprian Keyes Golf Club (Boylston), D.W. Field Golf Course (Brockton), William J. Devine GC at Franklin Park (Boston), Hyannis Golf Course (Cape Cod), Cranberry Valley Golf Course (Harwich), Sagamore Spring Golf Club (Lynnfield), Fenway Golf Center (Springfield), KOHR Golf (Natick), The Links at Mass Golf (Norton), and The Ranch Golf Club (Southwick).

As part of the curriculum, the children progress through a series of golf lessons where they are introduced to the different aspects of a golf course including the green, tee, fairway, rough, bunkers, and water hazards. The participants are also introduced to the basic elements of the game of golf and the swing including distance and accuracy control, course management, how to score, pace of play, honor, and proper, grip, stance, and posture.

In addition to golf, the participants are introduced to the nine core values inherent to the game including honesty, integrity, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, sportsmanship, judgment, respect, and courtesy. 2024 First Tee Tournament

Annual Golf Fundraiser At TPC Boston Raises Over $110K For First Tee — Massachusetts

NORTON, Massachusetts (October 31, 2024) — Under crisp fall skies Monday at TPC Boston, First Tee — Massachusetts celebrated its 18th annual fundraiser tournament, where golfers gathered not just to play but to make a difference in young lives through the timeless lessons of golf.

A strong turnout of 116 golfers participated in the shotgun start event, with proceeds supporting programs and activities of First Tee — Massachusetts, the state’s chapter of the national youth development organization where kids and teens are learning life lessons and leadership skills through golf.

According to Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee — Massachusetts, contributions have grown annually, driven by unique prizes, on-course contests, and increased awareness of First Tee’s broad impact. In total, this year’s tournament brought it more than $110,000, building off a similar total from the previous year.

“We had another terrific day out there, and I cannot thank the players and our generous sponsors enough,” Harris said. “I look forward to this event every year not just because it’s a critical fundraising mechanism for us but because we always get to see so many returning faces, some of whom have been supporting this event since before I arrived in 2018. Then we also get to welcome many new players and sponsors and introduce them to First Tee and the impact we are able to make through this game we all love.”

For the third consecutive year, Lighthouse Electrical Contracting, Inc., a full-service union electrical contractor based in Rockland, served as the tournament’s presenting sponsor. Herbie Aikens, president of Lighthouse Electrical and an accomplished amateur golfer, is a long-time supporter and member of the First Tee Committee.

“Golf changed my life,  so I love what First Tee does,” Aikens said during the tournament Monday. “It brings the game to people that maybe wouldn’t normally have access to it, and it’s a beautiful thing. I’ve seen what it’s done for me, so I want it to hopefully to do the same for others. When you sit down and see the impact iut has and how many sites are out there, I think it opens people’s eyes.”

“Herbie’s support and sponsorship of our event has been absolutely game-changing, and we are so grateful to have him in our corner,” Harris added. “Not only has his financial contributions been impactful, but as a well-known and highly-respected person on and off the golf course, his voice carries a lot of weight. So we greatly appreciate his belief in what we do.”

Aikens played in a foursome with J.P. Norden, who, after losing a leg in the Boston Marathon bombing, launched a charity to support other amputees. Their team included amateur standouts Mark O’Sullivan and Brian Higgins, who posted a low score of 10-under-par 61 in the best-ball format.

Lighthouse Electrical Contracting continues to support the tournament as the Presenting Sponsor. (Mass Golf)

A crowd favorite “beat the pro” contest returned this year on the par-3 8th hole. Aikens’ friend Matt Parziale, the 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, challenged participants to hit their shots closer to the hole than his. For an additional fee, they could use the same club as Parziale — including, in some cases, a putter or driver.

The team of Andrew GodekJohn RolleriMichael Rolleri, and Roy Dellinger earned the low net score of 19-under-par 53, featuring three net eagles.

Beyond the tournament, there are many ways to support First Tee’s mission, from equipment donations to volunteering and financial contributions. First Tee aims to introduce kids and teens to the game of golf, instilling values like honesty, respect, and confidence.

Impact Stories – Summer 2022

Kensie Carrol

Kensie Carrol Interviewing Jon Rahm after Tuesday’s Practice Round

Kensie Carrol has been a participant of First Tee Massachusetts since she was 7 years old. She is currently a Par participant at the Franklin Park – Boston location and was selected this past June to spend the day with Golf Channels Kira Dixon. The day included an interview with Jon Rahm, a 1-on-1 with Beau Hossler, plus a group of TV hosts and reporters who were on site for the 122nd U.S. Open.

“Who are you rooting for, Celtics or Warriors?” she asked Rahm. He smiled and laughed before admitting he was pulling for the Celtics, as his family has vacationed with star forward Jayson Tatum in the past.

“We selected a few kids we thought would be good and interviewed them over Zoom, and Kensie really rose to the top,” said Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee Massachusetts. “Kensie really shined, so we were happy to select her for this experience.”

Kensie Carrol and Kira Dixon Practicing Interview Techniques

Kensie may have exuded some shyness, but with the cameras on she opened up around some of the world’s best players. She also asked Rahm if he has a favorite club to help him escape from trouble (It depends on the day). With Hossler, she asked if he was nervous about this year’s U.S. Open, and if there was another sport he’s good at besides golf. (He said only baseball).

“They’re really nice,” Kensie said of the people she interviewed.

Kimberlee (Kensie’s mother) said she has natural reporter skills, “She does a lot of observing first. She has tons of friends, too, so everyone wants to hear from Kensie.”

She also received high praise from Dixon, who introduced her to golf writer Dylan Dethier, Scott Walker from Golf Channel and Michael Collins from ESPN.

“She was a natural,” Dixon said of Kensie. “She clearly really loves golf and enjoyed getting to be in the thick of things on the golf course and did a great job answering questions”

Kensie continues to work on her golf game throughout the summer and looks forward to the many more opportunities that may come her way.

Conor Olsen

Conor Olsen, Sam Burns, Scottie Scheffler and Andrew Novak after Monday’s practice round

Conor Olsen, now 14, is a participant from our Boston – Franklin Park location whos love for the game only grew larger after he was a standard bearer during this years U.S. Open. Unfortunately, in early February of this year, while traveling for a hockey practice, he began not to feel well. Later that evening he found himself at Boston Children’s Hospital where he was then diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, and that he needed to begin treatment immediately.

Scared and unsure of the future, Conor pushed through treatments with his family, friends and strangers by his side. By the time we saw Conor in June, he finished chemo treatments. During Monday’s practice round, Conor was standard bearer for Andrew Beckler, Sam Burns, Scottie Scheffler and Andrew Novak. During the round, he was very open and honest about his journey with the players. As the first nine holes wrapped up, the pros were kind enough to take a photo with him. Scottie Scheffler took the time to make sure he gave Conor a signed ball and glove, thanking him for being out there in the heat.

Conor returned on Wednesday afternoon with some magnificent news for everyone. The night before, he got the call that he is now cancer free.

2022 Spring: Impact Stories

First Tee Impact Stories – Spring 2022

Keira Joshi playing in the NEPGA Jr. Championship at Val Halla Golf Course in Maine – 2021

Keira Joshi began as a First Tee participant at age seven alongside her twin brother, Kyzar. 10 years later, they are still active with First Tee and working diligently toward achieving ACE level certification, the highest achievement a participant can reach within the program. This winter, Keira and Kyzar participated in the 2022 First Tee Leadership Series in partnership with the PGA TOUR Superstores. The Leadership series is an interactive five-week series designed to provide teens the opportunity to discover their personal values and emerging leadership strengths. For the last three years, Keira and Kyzar have also volunteered to coach younger classes in Braintree, Natick, and Norton.

During the 2021 summer season at age 16, Keira participated in several Mass Golf events including the Massachusetts Women’s Amateur, where she qualified for match play. She also won the Osgood Memorial Trophy for Low Net score during the qualifying rounds, becoming the first teenager to win the honor since Isabel Southard did so in 2014 at age 19.  Joshi was also selected to the Mass Golf team for the New England Junior Amateur Invitational, becoming part of the squad that swept the girls and the boys team competitions. Joshi also finished tied for seventh with scores of 79-75 at the Mass Golf Girls Junior Amateur, and tied for second at the Challenge Cup Girls Championship with rounds of 80-72.

“Participating in First Tee means learning important life skills, such as honesty, integrity, and perseverance, on and off the golf course.” Joshi said. “Being introduced to those skills at a young age has given me the tools necessary to accomplish all that I have done, and still hope to do, in golf. Competing at the New England Junior Amateur and representing Team Massachusetts was one of the highlights of my Summer. I love to compete and love being on a team, and I hope to continue both of those by playing golf at the collegiate level.”

Now a junior at Ashland High School, Keira competes on the boys’ golf team since her school doesn’t have a girls’ team. Not letting that stop her, Keira is now a co-captain and has helped her team qualify for the Boys sectional tournament the past three years. She is also excited to play as an individual at the Girls Sectional Tournament this spring.

An accomplished athlete and student, Keira is also a varsity swimmer, Student Council Board Member, and Honor Roll Student.

David Jope with professional golfer Kamaiu Johnson at a special First Tee event hosted by The Ridge Club in Sandwich, MA

David Jope is a sophomore in high school and has been involved with First Tee since he was seven years old. Jope has taken First Tee classes at three out of our seven locations, including Brockton, Norton and Hyannis. Today, he is progressing through the Eagle level at our Norton location, The Links at Mass Golf.

Jope is currently on the Varsity Golf team at his high school and earned his varsity letter last year as a sophomore in the Fall of 2021. He also received the team’s Most Improved Award for his growth and development following his freshman campaign.

“I think that award reflects a lot of what I learned in First Tee,” David said. “For example, I was taught that perseverance means I must continue even when I make a mistake or when things are difficult. This lesson helped me continue throughout the ups and downs of the high school season. Without First Tee, I never would have connected with the coaches and other golfers who have made my golf journey so much fun and such a great experience.”

Jope is also involved in Boy Scouts where he is currently a Life Scout and is pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout. Throughout his scouting years, he has earned 75 merit badges. His favorite badges are Golf, Personal Fitness, First Aid, Landscape Architecture and Nature.

First Tee Making Their Mark At The 2023 Mass Amateur

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 12, 2023

MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, Massachusetts – Participants from the First Tee — Massachusetts were invited to get a front-row view of Essex County Club on Wednesday.

First Tee — Massachusetts once again lent a hand to the operations portion of the Massachusetts Amateur Championship. First Tee, a youth development organization that introduces the game of golf and its inherent values to young people, is partnered with Mass Golf and in past years has brought its youth members to championship events to experience live competition.

During the Round of 32, Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee Massachusetts, and First Tee members George, Miles, and Kensie all had their eyes on the sky. They were tracking all 32 tee shots on the signature 152-yard, par-3, guarded by bunkers on the left and right sides with a creek running in front.

Catherine Carmignani, Assistant Executive Director of Mass Golf, stands with First Tee participants Miles, George, and Kensie (pictured left to right). (Mass Golf)

“Events like this are fantastic,” Harris said. “It’s such a great opportunity to get our kids into a new environment in a place like Essex that they may not have a chance to get to see otherwise to see some amazing golf. They get to see things in action that they’re practicing in class.”

Kensie, George, and Miles marking balls atop the green on hole seven. (Mass Golf)

“Opportunities like these are not only beneficial to the First Tee participants but to everyone here that had an interaction with these young “game changers,” Carmignani said. “Everyone walked away with a smile on their face. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with Kensie, Miles and George. Being around the next generation of golfers is super inspiring and reinvigorating.”

“To be able to do this out in an environment with some of the best amateur players in the state is a super neat opportunity,” Harris added. “We’ve done this every year since I’ve been here, and it’s always a fun experience. The kids get a lot out of it and it’s great for the players to see the kids out here as well. We always appreciate the opportunity.”

In fact, they were the center of many of our conversations throughout the day.”

Participants will also experience the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta University Center and the Bobby Jones Golf Club.

The Leadership Summit is held at Arthur Blank’s West Creek Ranch outside of Bozeman, MT, and is designed for teens to explore leadership concepts including (1) building authentic relationships by developing awareness, (2) growing through challenge via positive risk taking, and (3) developing positive self-identity through dynamic outdoor and teambuilding activities.

“We are incredibly proud of these three outstanding individuals,” said Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee – Massachusetts. “Over the years I have gotten to know Chris, Kyzar, and Keira personally and I continue to be impressed with their growth and development as people. While they are unique as individuals, they all share the common trait of embracing and believing in what First Tee has to offer, then living out those values in their day-to-day lives on and off the golf course. They have represented our chapter in numerous local opportunities and on the national stage, and I can’t think of three more deserving participants to have selected for this year’s leadership development opportunities.”

Kyzar and Keira Joshi, 18, have been involved in First Tee – Massachusetts for more than 10 years at our Norton location, and recently completed their ACE level projects, the capstone of the First Tee experience. Each of them have recently taken their First Tee experiences to new heights with Keira finishing runner-up in the Golf to Paradise – First Tee Champions Challenge in Naples, FL this Winter. She was also selected to compete in the 2023 First Tee National Championship but due to scheduling conflicts will not be able to attend.

“I’m so excited to have been selected for the Leadership Academy in Atlanta!” Said Joshi “I’ve been hearing from Kyzar how fun Montana was last year, so I’m very eager to experience Atlanta. I’ve been in the First Tee for so many years and this is the first time I’ll be going to a national leadership summit so it means a lot to me to be able to go. As one of our last big First Tee events before we become alumni, I think it will be extra interesting for me and Kyzar to experience this together. I’m excited to connect with so many new people this fall, so I’m looking forward to learning things in Atlanta that will help me build new relationships at Hamilton.”

Kyzar earned an invitation to attend the inaugural Leadership Academy following his standout performance at the 2022 Leadership Summit in Montana, where his performance warranted selected into the First Tee College Scholarship Program. He will receive financial support as well as access to mentorship and professional development opportunities throughout his four-year collegiate experience. Both Kyzar and Keira Joshi will be attending Hamilton College and will play golf for the Division III institution.

Taylor, 15, has been a part of First Tee – Massachusetts at the Franklin Park location for seven years. He has also represented the chapter at several outreach and fundraiser events, including joining chapter staff to accept a USGA donation check on the field at Fenway Park. Taylor also gave a speech at the 2022 John D. Mineck Foundation event at Boston Golf Club about the impact First Tee has had on his life. Taylor, along with both Joshi twins, also served as a standard bearer at the 122nd U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, MA.

“While I am in Montana I hope to build connections with my counterparts and also have a deeper understanding of First Tee’s core values in action” said Taylor, “Over several years I have been taught what the core values mean but experiences like this are important to live it. That being said, at the Leadership Summit I will be exposed to people who don’t just have a deep understanding of their own definition of the values that connect us, but a chance to share how we apply them to our everyday activities. I want to be able to take away the good habits they have built from their time being engaged with the game of golf and share the fun that we have together from our different parts of the country.”

First Tee – Massachusetts has now had at least one participant selected in each of the first three years that the Leadership Summit has been offered, including Christopher Towle (Boston) in 2021, and both Saidah DaSilva (Boston) and Kyzar Joshi in 2022.

NAPLES, FLORIDA – First Tee – Massachusetts participants Keira Joshi and David Jope took second place in the 2023 Golf to Paradise – First Tee Champions Challenge in Naples, FL, Feb. 12-15. The event was hosted by the Chubb Classic presented by SERVPRO, the Naples, Marco Island & The Everglades, Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), and First Tee – Naples/Collier.

“This was an incredible experience for our participants and we’re so thankful to the Chubb Classic for inviting our chapter to be a part of it,” said Kyle Harris, Director of Operations for First Tee – Massachusetts. “The opportunity for Keira and David to compete and engage with 10 other participants from around the country, across a wide range of activities, was absolutely priceless.”

Jope (Freetown, MA) and Joshi (Ashland, MA) joined participants from the First Tee chapters of Greater Chicago, Greater Philadelphia, Metropolitan New York, and Naples/Collier. During their time in the Sunshine State, they participated in four days of golf, a community service project, and social events. On the three days of competition, Jope and Joshi improved each day as they got more familiar with one another and knocked the winter rust off their game. Additionally, they overcame the challenge of a new playing surface as it was the first time playing on Bermuda grass for both of them.

“This was so much fun and I really appreciate being selected for this awesome event,” said Jope. “I am really thankful for the opportunity that First Tee and the Chubb Classic has given me to compete and make new friends in a constructive and positive environment.”

“This experience really meant a lot to me,” said Joshi. “I had so much fun. I’m really grateful to the Chubb Classic and First Tee – Naples for setting us up on so many awesome courses. And I met some really great people from other First Tee chapters, both kids and coaches, who I hope to stay connected with. I had a blast and I will definitely remember this trip.”

On the opening day of competition, a 9-hole scramble at Tiburon Golf Club’s Gold course, Jope and Joshi logged a 40 and found themselves in third place. The following day saw the Bay-Staters posted perhaps their most impressive round of the tournament, shooting a 39 in the challenging alternate-shot format at Royal Poinciana Golf Club’s Pines course, which moved them into second place overall.

Jope and Joshi wrapped up the tournament with a final-round 37 in a 9-hole best-ball (four-ball) on The Club at Twin Eagles’ Talon course. Paired with the overall leaders from the Naples chapter, the two groups competed neck-and-neck, with Naples making a birdie against Joshi’s par on the final hole to win the four-ball by one shot. That performance cemented an overall second-place finish for First Tee – Massachusetts.

“I could not be more proud of the way Keira and David represented themselves, our chapter, Mass Golf, and the entire First Tee Network,” Harris said. “They were really impressive in the competition but more importantly they lived out the life skills and character values that set First Tee apart. They were leaders among their peers, and gracious and appreciative to our various hosts. I was really impressed by them all week.”

Joshi, Jope, and Harris traveled to Naples on Saturday, Feb. 11 and were welcomed to a practice round at Royal Poinciana. The next morning they enjoyed a very windy practice round at Foxfire Country Club, arranged by Paul Coutoumas, a First Tee – Massachusetts lead coach and head professional at D.W. Field GC, who is a Foxfire member and winter resident of Naples. After the round, they joined the rest of the First Tee chapters for a catamaran cruise around Naples Bay.

After Monday’s scramble round, all of the event participants attended the First Tee – Naples/Collier gala fundraiser event, assisting with festivities as the chapter raised money for it’s new learning center.

Prior to Tuesday’s alternate-shot round, the participants gathered for a beach clean-up, then headed back to Tiburon for a clinic with 5-time PGA TOUR winner and Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup player, Scott Verplank. Joshi was particularly pleased with the clinic as Verplank was able to give her a tip that helped straighten out a hook she was fighting in the previous round. The clinic was sponsored by Porsche of Naples, and emcee’d by Chubb Classic Executive Director Sandy Diamond.

“We have to say another huge Thank You to Tiburon Golf Club, Royal Poinciana Golf Club and The Club at Twin Eagles for making their spectacular golf facilities available to us,” added Harris. “Our kids were blown away by the quality of the golf courses and the graciousness of the club staff and members. Additionally, tournament manager Alexa Wood of Outlyr, Chubb Classic Executive Director Sandy Diamond, and Porsche of Naples did a great job setting up the event and arranging an incredible week for our kids. We are just thrilled with the experience all the way around.”
